Spring has truly arrived, and it’s such a delightful time to enjoy the sunshine with your furry friends! However, before you head out for those lovely walks, there are a few important things to keep in mind to ensure your dog's safety.
First up, let’s talk about some common plants that can be quite harmful.
Remember, all this can happen if your curious pup decides to nibble on parts of these plants. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on what they’re getting into while exploring the great outdoors!
It’s important to remember that some of our furry friends can be sensitive to pollen and grass. These allergies can lead to some itchiness, red or inflamed skin, and even hair loss. Your pup might start licking their paws more, or you might notice watery eyes, sneezing, a runny nose, or some snoring, which can be a bit concerning! It’s a great idea to give your pooch a quick wipe down, especially their paws and underbelly, after outdoor adventures. But if their symptoms seem severe or don’t improve, don’t hesitate to pop into the vet for some advice.
As the season heats up, let’s not forget about those pesky fleas and ticks that love the warmer, damp weather. Be sure to check your pets, especially if they've been exploring through long grass. The most common spots for ticks are found around their head, neck, ears, and feet, so a sniff around those areas is a wise move.
Also, keep in mind that during this time, pesticides and fertilisers might be scattered about, particularly on pavements by councils or by farmers on their crops. Luckily, here in Todmorden, most farmers use cow manure as fertiliser, which is actually safe for your dogs to walk through. Just make sure your ‘leave it’ command is top-notch, so they don’t decide to snack on the goodies!
So, while you're out enjoying the lovely sunshine with your furry companions, let’s make sure they stay safe and sound! Happy walks!
